companion horses

Due to the sensitive nature of rescue work some of our horses are not listed on our website.  Occasionally there are cases where photo ID will be requested in the beginning phases of adoption inquiries to ensure safe placement of our horses.

ANNIE
Breed: Tennessee Walking Horse     Sex: Mare      Foaled: 1996        Age: 26       Height: 15.2hh       Color: Blue Roan

Suitable for: Companion
Adoption Fee: $350

This beautiful older mare is still serviceably sound for the occasional light ride and pony rides around the yard. During her riding evaluation she calmly accepted a small rider for a pony ride. At times she can be a little hard to catch, cookies help, and can be strong in-hand so will require an intermediate handler. Overall she is a sweet mare that gets along well in the herd, stands for vet and farrier, loads and travels well. Currently she is being treated for uveitis and requires a mask to protect her eyes from the sun and daily eye medications, which she is very good for. This condition may recur and she will need an adopter who is willing to stay on top of it to prevent damage to her vision.

AUSTIN
Breed: Quarter Horse     Sex: Gelding      Foaled: 1999        Age: 23       Height: ~15hh

Suitable for: Companion
Limitations: Old right stifle injury, pasture sound.  He is a cribber however a cribbing collar works great at preventing this behavior.
Adoption Fee: $350

Austin was a steady trail horse with some dressage under his belt, however he is ready to retire.  In the pasture he is middle of the pack and gets along well with other geldings.  He's a pretty easy going guy but can be a little pushy at times, so we recommend an intermediate handler for him.  Austin is good for vet and farrier, loads and trailers well.

BABE
Breed: Grade     Sex: Mare      Foaled: 2000     Age: 22       Height: 15hh

Suitable for: Companion
Adoption Fee: $350

Babe is learning to trust people and has already come a long way since her arrival. She can be approached and caught, she leads well, stands well for the vet but can be a bit guarded during grooming and handling. She just needs a little time to break down her walls and let us in. This lovely lady will be a project, her level of training is yet to be revealed and she may end up being a companion only. We can't wait to see her blossom into the wonderful mare we know she is!

DAKOTA
Breed: Tennessee Walking Horse     Sex: Gelding      Foaled: 1999     Age: 23       Height: 16hh

Suitable for: Companion
Adoption Fee: $350

What an absolute gem! This handsome gentleman adores human attention and will drop everything to come see you, often giving a soft nicker to say hello. He would happily listen to all your troubles, hopes and dreams as you comb the tangles from his mane and spend quality time with him. Dakota is easy going in the herd and gets along with everyone, even playing with a youngster on occasion. While he is no longer rideable due to weakness in his back end, he shows us daily that he would do just about anything for us. He loads and travels well, stands for vet and farrier, is fine for bathing and easy to handle and lead. He is the perfect companion for any mare or gelding looking for a friend.

DESTINY
Breed: Holsteiner     Sex: Mare      Foaled: 1988     Age: 34        Height: 16.2hh

Suitable for: Companion
Adoption Fee: $350

This regal matriarch spent many years as a broodmare bringing beautiful Holsteiner foals into the world. She is enjoying life in retirement, making close friends and getting pampered by her groom. This big beautiful lady knows her size and on occasion will try to use it to get where she wants to go, usually back out to her friends. She will need an intermediate or experienced handler who is not intimidated by her size and strength. Destiny has lived outside 24/7 and has also been stalled with daily turnout, she is perfectly happy with either. When she arrived she had severe EOTRH of her incisors and they were extracted. Because she no longer has front teeth her tongue will occasionally hang out of her mouth, it looks a little silly on such a dignified lady but she doesn’t mind, she is just so happy to be pain free. She is on daily medication to manage Cushing’s. Destiny is looking for just the right home where she can be a close companion to another retired mare.

FANDANGO
Breed: Quarter Horse/Arabian cross          Sex: Gelding         Foaled: 2003        Age: 19          Height: 15

Adoption Fee: $350

Fandango is a beautiful gelding, gets along well with other horses and enjoys spending time with his grooms.  He can be anxious away from his friends and in new surroundings but with a calm and patient handler he does very well in ground work, both lunging and in-hand.  He is sound and has been ridden in the past but we found that he would much prefer to be a pasture puff.  Fandango would make an excellent companion for any gelding, he gets along well with his pasture mates and tends to be lower ranking.

FRISCO
Breed: Grade          Sex: Mare         Foaled: 1996        Age: 26          Height: 15hh

Adoption Fee: $350

This stunning mare is looking for just the right home to call her own. Frisco lived alone for several years and because she missed being part of a herd so much she tends to develop very close relationships with her pasture mates. She would love to find a home where she could be a companion to another mare. She is good for vet and farrier as long as her friends are close by for moral support. As she can be strong in hand when she is away from the pasture she will need an intermediate to advanced handler. Frisco is a lovely sweet mare who enjoys visitors to her pasture and appreciates long grooming sessions.

LADY   (Blue Starr Lady)
Breed: Thoroughbred          Sex: Mare         Foaled: 2/2/2000         Age: 22          Height: 16.3hh
Suitable for: Companion, possible light riding
Adoption Fee: $500

Lady is the perfect name for this elegant mare. She retired from racing in 2007, then tried her hand at being a broodmare. She likely has not been ridden since her days on the track, but with a little refresher course she may have years of light riding left in her and will be under evaluation for riding soon. During her dental exam the veterinarian found that she had EOTRH and all but a few of her front teeth have been removed, she has healed nicely and is a much happier gal. Her tongue hangs out a little on occasion without teeth to hold it in place but we think it’s endearing! This does not affect her chewing molars or her diet. Lady is a lovely mare inside and out and would be a wonderful companion to any mare who needs a friend.

LIEUTENANT
Breed: Tennessee Walking Horse           Sex: Gelding          Foaled: 1994        Age: 28       Height: ~15.3hh
Suitable for: Companion
Adoption Fee: $500

Lieutenant is a retired police horse who has had many adventures during his career. After all of his hard work and service to his community he is ready to take it easy.  He is very friendly with people and easy to handle but can be strong at times.  Lieutenant gets along well with his pasture buddies and would make a great companion to both mares and geldings. He prefers to be outside 24/7, but has no known vices in the stall. Lieutenant is an easy keeper and would fit right in to any herd.

NASH
Breed: Thoroughbred           Sex: Gelding          Foaled: 2015        Age: 7
Suitable for: Companion
Limitations: Nash had an old significant injury to the right hind cannon bone.  X-rays have shown that the bone healed well but the scarring may affect his gait.  He is pasture sound but unsuitable for riding.
Adoption Fee: $350

Nash came to us through a partnership with a rescue in North Carolina to help him find his forever home.  He is an easy going guy who is sweet, quiet and gets along well with his pasture mates, often playing halter tag and racing across the field with them.

PROP   (My Property)
Breed:
Thoroughbred          Sex: Gelding         Foaled: 3/1/1993        Age: 29         Height: 16.2hh

Adoption Fee: $350

Prop is a tall dark and handsome older gentleman who is a joy to be around. He was once a racehorse and had been a pleasure horse for several years after. As he is sound and able to carry a rider we did a quick riding evaluation on him to see if he would like to do some very light riding. When the tack went on his face lit up and it was as if he had gone back in time when he used to strut his stuff under saddle. He had some real pep in his step as he lunged beautifully in both directions before we hopped on. Under saddle he was a perfect angel with a look of pride on his face, remembering exactly what to do. Prop really enjoys the slower paced life of retirement but wouldn’t be opposed to having a quiet stroll around the property with a light rider on occasion. He is a hard keeper so will need extra groceries to keep his weight up. He stands well for the vet and farrier, is easy to handle, is used to a stall with daily turnout but is just as happy living outside 24/7. He would love to have a special place to call home once again.

REDDY
Breed:
Thoroughbred          Sex: Gelding         Foaled: 1994         Age: 28         Height: 15.2hh

Adoption Fee: $350

Reddy (formerly known as Ready or Not) originally came to us as one of the Davison Rescue horses in 1998. Due to a life change for his owner, Reddy has returned to us after being adopted out to a loving home for the past 17 years. He is an excellent companion who loves to play and is often caught in a rousing game of halter tag with his friends.

ROSIE
Breed:
Mustang          Sex: Mare         Foaled: 1998         Age: 24         Height: 15hh       Color: Bay Roan

Adoption Fee: $350

Rosie is a beautiful Sulphur/Kiger Mustang mare who is a little shy but once she gets to know you she is very sweet. We don't think she was ever trained to ride and will require a calm and patient experienced handler to win her over. In the pasture she is friendly with other horses, both geldings and mares and will make a great companion for any horse. She was stalled in her previous home and is now doing very well out in the pasture with a run-in 24/7. Although she can be difficult to catch at times, with a couple cookies and some patience she will walk right up to you. Rosie has been coming up to the barn for ground work. It appears she has had some basic training under her belt and accepts a bareback pad and bridle but she is not quite ready for a rider. She is at risk for laminitis so will require grass management or a grazing muzzle.

SNICKERS
Breed:
Arabian          Sex: Mare         Foaled: 1996         Age: 26         Height: 14.2hh       Color: Bay

Adoption Fee: $350

Snickers is an older mare that can take a little while to warm up to people but once she does she is sweet as can be. She is easy to handle for vet, farrier and grooming and loads well. We have found that she is not a fan of small children and would prefer a quiet handler. She forms close relationships in the herd and is quite a devoted friend. Snickers would make an excellent companion for another retire mare.

SUMMER
Breed: Quarter Horse      Sex: Mare       Foaled: 2001       Age: 21       Height: 15hh
Suitable for:  Companion
Limitations: Significant arthritis in left front knee but she is pasture sound.
Adoption Fee: $350

This stunning red roan quarter horse has been nothing but sweet since her arrival! She is a wonderful companion to her pasture mates and is a lovely horse with humans.  Summer is easy to handle, and minds her manners when being led.  She loves attention and is very happy to go for a walk, stand for grooming, or just spend time in the pasture with humans and other horses.  Summer loads easily and stands well for both farrier and vet.  She has had children on her back for pony rides in the past but the significant arthritis in her left front knee makes her unsuitable for regular riding.

THUNDER
Breed:
Saddlebred          Sex: Gelding           Foaled: ~ 1996        Age: 26

Adoption Fee: $350

This handsome gentleman is a very outgoing guy who is the first to greet you in the pasture, loves all of his pasture buddies and every other horse and human that walks by too!  Thunder knows his strength and can be pushy so will require a strong experienced handler.   We were told that he has been ridden in the past but has had a few years off so will likely be rusty.  He will be under evaluation for riding soon but at his age he would welcome retirement and be an amazing companion to either mares or geldings.

WINNIE
Breed:
Paint          Sex: Mare          Foaled: 1998       Age: 24          Height: 15hh
Suitable for: Companion
Limitations: An old right hind stifle injury has caused her to retire from riding but she is pasture sound.

Adoption Fee: $350

Winnie is a flashy sabino mare with her splashy white markings.  She lost her right eye several years ago and has adjusted well, her left eye is a beautiful blue.  She had been ridden in the past but has an old stifle injury causing her to retire, however she is pasture sound.  Winnie is a wonderful companion horse that gets along very well with her other pasture mates and will follow humans around like a puppy dog. She is content living outside 24/7 but is also very happy in a stall with daily turnout.  She can be a bit of a handful when anxious and requires an intermediate handler and mild sedation for the farrier.

ZEPHYR
Breed:
Thoroughbred         Sex: Mare          Foaled: 1995         Age: 27
Suitable for: Companion

Adoption Fee: $350

Zephyr is one of our Davison Rescue mares.  She is pasture sound but due to an old stifle injury she has retired from riding.  In the pasture she tends to be a lead mare and gets along well with her herd.  Zephyr is ready to find her forever home as a companion for another mare.
