Reflecting on the Davison Rescue

Reddy's (formal name Ready or Not) return to Horses' Haven has given us an opportunity to reflect on an important event in our past. Reddy was part of the Davison Rescue in 1998 where roughly 57 horses were found in horrendous conditions. Manure in stalls was 71" deep, the horses were wedged between the manure and the ceiling. All of the stalls and outer walls had been chewed through. The roof on the broodmares' run-in barn had collapsed, trapping several, who then had no access to food or water. Many of the horses' hooves were so long that they curled over the top of themselves. Almost all of the horses, even babies, were caked in manure. Horses' Haven volunteers came in and took as many as possible. Some sadly had to be put down on the spot, most were in desperate need of medical care and even basic needs of food and water.

This is what some have called the start of Horses' Haven as before this it was questionable if we were going to be able to continue. The economy was in rough shape and donations were very low. Once word got out that these horses needed us, the donations started flowing and allowed us to continue and become the strong organization we are today.  Not only the financial generosity of the community but also the hard work and dedication of volunteers allowed us to save many of these wonderful horses - many of whom are still adopted out living healthy and productive lives.

If you are the proud adopter of a Davison Rescue horse we would love for you to comment with an update and a picture!
